Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing practice known around the world for its calming, balancing, and restorative effects. If you’ve been wondering what a Reiki session is actually like or whether it might be right for you this guide is here to help. I’ll walk you through the experience step by step, so you can feel informed, comfortable, and confident about what to expect.

Understanding Reiki Sessions: The Basics

What Happens When You First Arrive

When you arrive for your Reiki session, the first focus is simply helping you feel comfortable and at ease. You’ll be welcomed into a calm, peaceful space designed to help your body and mind begin to relax right away.

We’ll start with a brief conversation about how you’ve been feeling, physically, emotionally, or energetically and what you’d like support with. This is a chance for you to share any concerns, intentions, or questions you may have. There’s no pressure to explain everything perfectly; even a general sense of stress, fatigue, or feeling “out of balance” is enough to guide the session.

You’ll remain fully clothed during Reiki, so I recommend wearing something soft and comfortable. Once you’re ready, you’ll lie down on a treatment table, and we’ll make sure you’re supported with pillows and blankets so you can completely relax. I'll encourage you to rest, breathe, and allow yourself to receive.

I'll place my hands lightly on the body. This touch is gentle and non-invasive, designed to facilitate the flow of energy.

The environment is often quiet and peaceful, with soft lighting and calming music to enhance relaxation. Sessions typically last between 45 minutes to an hour, allowing ample time for the energy to work deeply.

What is a Reiki Healing Session?

A Reiki healing session is a gentle, hands-on practice where I channel healing energy to support your body’s natural ability to restore balance. Each session is guided intuitively, based on what I sense within your energy field and what you share about your current needs.

The session usually begins with a brief consultation to discuss any health concerns or goals.

Once the session starts, I place my hands on the client's body in a series of positions. These positions correspond to major energy centres, or chakras, and other areas where energy may be blocked or depleted.

During the session, many people experience sensations such as warmth, gentle tingling, waves of relaxation, or a deep sense of peace. Some clients notice emotions rising to the surface or see colours or imagery. These experiences are completely natural and are often part of the body’s process of releasing stress and restoring balance. Every session is unique.

Throughout the session, I remain fully present and focused, allowing the energy to flow where it’s needed most, without force or manipulation. Afterward, you’ll have a few quiet moments to reorient, and I may share any impressions that arose. You’ll be encouraged to rest, drink water, and take things gently for the remainder of the day to support the integration of the session.

The Role of the Practitioner and Client

The practitioner acts as a conduit for the healing energy. Their role is to create a safe, supportive space and to maintain a calm, centred presence throughout the session. Training and attunement are essential for practitioners to develop the skills and sensitivity required for effective Reiki healing.

Clients play an active role by being open to the experience and allowing themselves to relax fully. It is important to communicate any discomfort or questions before or during the session. While Reiki is safe for all ages and conditions, it is not a substitute for medical treatment but rather a complementary therapy.

Who Can Benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds and can be received alongside both conventional and complementary healthcare. It is gentle, non-invasive, and is often chosen by those looking for a natural way to support their overall wellbeing.

Many people seek Reiki when they are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained. It can be especially supportive during times of change, grief, or burnout, helping to calm the nervous system and create space for rest and clarity.

Others come for physical support, using Reiki as a complementary therapy to encourage relaxation and the body’s natural healing processes. While Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment, it can help reduce tension, improve sleep, and promote a greater sense of balance and ease.

Reiki can also be beneficial if you simply feel “out of sorts” or disconnected, even if you can’t quite explain why. You don’t need to be in crisis or have a specific problem to receive Reiki many people choose sessions as a form of regular energetic self-care and emotional reset.

Ultimately, Reiki meets you where you are. Each session is tailored to your individual needs, whether you’re seeking deep relaxation, emotional support, or a gentle way to reconnect with yourself.

Benefits and What to Expect After a Session

After a Reiki session, many people feel deeply relaxed, lighter, or more at peace. You may notice a sense of mental clarity, emotional calm, or simply the feeling that your whole system has “settled.”

Reiki supports the body’s natural rebalancing process, so experiences afterward can vary from person to person. Some people feel energized and uplifted, while others feel pleasantly tired and ready for a good night’s sleep. Both responses are completely normal.

Or you might also notice subtle shifts over the next few days. This can include improved sleep, reduced tension in the body, emotional release, or new insights about situations in your life. Occasionally, old emotions or memories may briefly come to the surface as they move through and release. If this happens, it’s usually temporary and part of the body’s natural process of clearing stress.

To maximise the benefits, I may recommend a series of sessions, especially for chronic conditions or significant emotional challenges. Self-care practices such as meditation, gentle exercise, and hydration can also support ongoing healing.

Above all, it’s important to be kind to yourself afterward. Reiki continues to work on subtle levels, and giving yourself space to slow down allows the benefits to unfold more fully.

Tips for Preparing for Your Reiki Session

To get the most out of your Reiki experience, consider the following practical tips:

  • Wear comfortable clothing: Loose, breathable clothes help you relax fully.

  • Avoid heavy meals: Eat lightly before the session to prevent discomfort.

  • Arrive early: Give yourself time to settle in and clear your mind.

  • Set an intention: Think about what you hope to achieve or release during the session.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink water before and after to help flush out toxins.

  • Keep an open mind: Be receptive to whatever sensations or insights arise.

By preparing thoughtfully, you create the best conditions for a transformative and healing experience.

Exploring a Reiki session can be a meaningful step toward greater wellbeing. Whether you’re completely new to energy healing or looking to deepen your existing practice, understanding what happens during a session allows you to approach the experience with confidence and ease. It’s an opportunity to slow down, relax, restore, and reconnect with your natural inner balance.
